Degenerative Disk Disease - DDD
The disc is the shock absorbing material between each of your vertebral bodies that compose our spine and encase your spinal cord. When they rupture, bulge or herniate they can cause pain directly and/or press on the nerve root exiting your spinal cord resulting in more pain and dysfunction.
But you must remember, not all back or neck pain is DISC!
This is what the surgeons often forget. Neck and back pain come from a variety of sources including disc pain (DDD), muscle pain (spasm), joint pain (facetitis), tendonitis, bursitis, etc. That is why so many post surgical patients do not do as well as they had hoped. The surgery often only addresses the DDD component of there overall pain.Sometimes, if you can improve the muscle pain, joint pain, tendonitis and/or bursitis with the correct rehabilitation, you do not even need the disc surgery.
